Expectant mothers rejoice in one of the few amazing things you’re actually encouraged to do!

Whether you’re in your first trimester or third, you may have heard a laundry list of things you can’t or shouldn’t do: “don’t eat sushi, avoid heavy lifting, don’t take hot baths, stop sleeping on your back, no caffeine” - in reality, that list of no’s is really, really long.

Many people reach out to find out if their loved one or themselves can float while pregnant only to be delighted that it’s encouraged for a long list of reasons. Float therapy offers a beautiful environment for a soon-to-be mum up to 36 weeks to take a time out in. A place to find your centre while connecting with the new life inside of you. Learn how to float while pregnant here.

(Although pregnant floats are encouraged for a multitude of reasons, you should consult with your doctor whenever you incorporate a new treatment during pregnancy. We encourage expectant mothers to float until up to 36 weeks.)

But in essence, you are floating in a pool which contains 400kg of magnesium sulphate (or Epsom salts) and 1000kg of water, making you float effortlessly even when pregnant. The water and air are both set to your skin temperature, 34.5 degrees C and you can experience no sound, no sight and limited touch, to give the ultimate sensation of sensory reduction.

Perhaps the concept of having a relaxing and soothing hour of deep rest might be enough for you to give it a go, and kudos - follow your instincts girl! But if you’re wondering “what are the benefits?” The answer is plenty.

  • Float therapy releases feel-good hormones and endorphins into your body that create a lasting sensation of joy and content.

  • The setting also promotes a deep sense of relaxation and meditation which will leave you feeling calm, relaxed and well-rested.

  • A common complaint in pregnancy is the pain and discomfort the added weight of pregnancy can do to the body - float therapy puts you in an immediate state of weightlessness that relieves pressure off joints and muscles and relieves varicosities.

  • It helps to reduce swelling (ankles, I’m looking at you) and lowers blood pressure.

One of the most interesting benefits of float therapy during pregnancy is the bonding it promotes through a concept called the “mirror effect” where by sharing a similar environment to you baby you can for a deeper state of unconscious connection.
