We understand that floating can be quite a foreign concept to most, so we have listed some of the more frequently asked questions to help prepare you for your float experience with City Cave

+ Why do people float?

Float therapy is great for meditation and mindfulness, as well as:

Easing stress Easing pain Reducing overstimulation Lack of sleep - one hour of float therapy is the equivalent to 4-8 hours of sleep Sensory deprivation in floatation tanks is the epitome of relaxation and provides other health benefits than those listed above. The Epsom Salts are rich in magnesium, acting as a natural muscle relaxant and anti-inflammatory, which further reduces stress for an even more encompassing relaxation experience.

Mind and body are cleared of tension and stress, allowing you to let go and feel nothing but relief as you truly relax.

+ What are some clinical reasons to float?

People float clinically for:

  • Fibromyalgia
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Joint pain
  • PTSD
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Insomnia

+ What do I wear when I am floating?

Your birthday suit! Nudey rudey as you are in your own room and it helps with the sensory input into the brain.

+ What is a couples float?

A couples float is when two people (generally a couple) float in the same room together. You are welcome to float with anyone you wish to, but as above, you will be nude when doing so.

+ How often should I float?

Because floating is a completely natural process, you can float as much as you like, but it really depends on your lifestyle. We have guests with chronic injuries who float every 3 days, and some who come in once a month to help with stress. It's completely based on your needs and the results you are after. Much like the gym, going once won't have the same impact as going consistently.

+ Can I float if I am pregnant?

We always recommend women check with their doctors, especially if they’re in their first or third trimester, before having a float therapy session. However, floating is popular with many pregnant women and is safe to enjoy with your doctor’s approval (up to 36 weeks). Being relieved of the weight of your bundle of joy provides much-needed relief to a lot of mothers-to-be. BUY GIFT CARD

+ Can I float if I am menstruating?

Unfortunately not due to hygiene reason. We recommend waiting until you're in an alternate phase of your cycle before coming in to experience float therapy.

+ How do you keep the pools clean?

Although your appointment is only 60 minutes, we allow 90 minutes for each session to give us the chance to clean and re-dress the rooms between appointments, as well as filter the pools. Our filters are designed for 10,000 litres of water, but the pools only contain 1000 litres. Each pool also has 400Kg (approx) of salt in them, so no bacteria is able to cultivate in this environment. Again, we require everyone to shower before and after their session to aid in hygiene.

+ Do you have car parking on site?

We certainly do! Each City Cave has parking so you can be sure not to worry about your car whilst you are looking after yourself.

+ Is it possible to drown while in a float pool?

No, even if you do fall asleep, you will be kept afloat thanks to the density of the water. You might get some water in your eyes, but that’s it.

+ Can I eat and drink before my float therapy session?

You don’t want to be starving, or too full, when you have your session, as your stomach’s noises will distract from the experience. A light meal two or so hours before your session is fine, just be sure not to drink anything but water - no energy drinks, alcohol or caffeine.

+ Will I dehydrate from lying in the float pool for an hour?

No, and you will find that your skin feels smoother after your session - you don’t experience pruning like you would if you laid in a regular bath for the same period of time. Absorbing a large amount of magnesium thanks to the Epsom salts in the water is fantastic for your body, so you have nothing to worry about.
